Archive

Our archives are currently located in the Transportation Building at the Old Newport Workshops

The Archive contains a large range of general paper files, Victorian Railways Publications and other books, maps, plans, and a collection of almost 50,000 photographs and slides; related to railways in Victoria. Documents date from the 1860’s to the present day.

Certain documents, such individual employment records are not included in our collection, but may be accessed from the Public Records Office Victoria.

You may be pleasantly surprised however at what we can find for you.

We are currently working to create a full electronic catalogue of all holdings and our long term aim is to link the catalogue to digital image copies of all material held.

We welcome donations of material to the Archives; please contact the ARHS contacts on the home page and we will get back to you.

Because the Archive is located inside the secure area of Newport Workshops, visits are by arrangement. We can also conduct searches for material on request. Contact the ARHS at 1300 220 220 or contact Ian Jenkin on 03 9509 4564 jenkin4@aardvark.net.au or Peter Carwardine on 03 9571 8958

To support the cost of maintaining the Archive a fee is charged for research and searches Please follow this link to the Fee and Search Request sheet.

Please complete the sheet and email it to the above address or post it to ARHS Vic Div Inc. Do not send a payment in advance ; we will invoice you at the conclusion of a search.

It is planned to develop a facility to sell surplus pre-loved items. Watch this space for  a link to the products page.
